South Dakota Weekly Cattle Auction Summary

USDA Livestock, Poultry & Grain Market News · Federal-State Market News Service, Sioux Falls, SD (LS-SF)
Feeder CattleReceipts 17,042Last week 28,590Year ago 29,878
Slaughter CattleReceipts 1,523Last week 1,325Year ago 1,392

Compared to last week: Steer calves 10.00 to 20.00 higher, heifer calves 15.00 to 30.00 higher. Yearling feeder steers steady to 3.00 lower, yearling heifers unevenly steady. Very good demand for steer and heifer calves, good to very good demand for yearlings. As the CME cattle futures contracts made gains and cash fed cattle up to 230.00, cattle feeders were ready to step back in and compete heavily to get cattle bought. Most auction markets won't host a feeder cattle sale on the weeks of Christmas and New Years, leaving only 1 more full week to buy feeder cattle before the end of the year. Winter weather conditions at the start and end of the week made it difficult for cattle producers to get stock hauled to town, better weather in the forecast for this week.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
