Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 700 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher, over 700 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 650 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher, over 650 lbs 5.00 to 8.00 higher. Very good demand for all weights of steers and heifers, demand kept increasing as the week progressed as the CME Live and Feeder Cattle contracts gained and the prospect for a much higher cash fat market materialized. By Friday reports of 215.00 for fat cattle were being paid, the futures turned around from their highs and traded lower before the Cattle On Feed Report came out. The report is very bullish as it shows a continued decline of cattle on feed, placements 18% fewer than last year, which confirmed what cattle feeders have been fully aware of all winter long. The hope is now that fat cattle can stay at 200.00, or more, for the year. Yearling operators are willing to compete very heavily to get their light cattle needs secured, while the cattle feeders started the week with more cautious optimism. The pop in the fat market gave cattle feeders what they needed to settle their uneasiness about the market, as breakeven prices look to be around 200.00 if they have any hope of making a profit. The entire state is in drought conditions, with the worst in the southern tier of the state. Cow-calf producers are calving now, there was a winter storm to the south but did not affect South Dakota except for very windy conditions.
