Compared to last week: Feeder steers 4.00 to 8.00 higher, except 550-700 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Very good demand for all weights of steers and heifers after the rise in the fat market a week ago, a more friendly cattle futures complex, and another rise in the cash fat market up to 207.00 as of this writing. Cattle feeders have remained very optimistic for the fat market during the spring months, as this is where the yearly highs are made, but the futures contracts until the last two weeks was well under the cash market. When the board decided to finally follow the cash and the market fundamentals, the April contract was able to put on 10.00 in two weeks. The northern trade remains several dollars over the board, and with the June contract approaching 200.00, the bullishness that existed amongst cattle producers grew even more. Flesh condition is starting to run heavier, as the home raised cattle are about gone and now it's time to sell the backgrounded cattle that were bought and fed this fall. The lack of moisture is becoming a real concern as cattle producers across the state are concerned about the prospects of this year's grazing season as the winter has been open and dry, this is starting to be reflected in the demand for replacement heifers.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
