Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 650 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 higher, over 650 lbs unevenly steady. Feeder heifers unevenly steady. Good to very good demand for steers and heifers this week, the best demand was seen for those cattle in light enough weight and flesh for backgrounding. Supply of this type of cattle is getting tighter and there is great interest in buying these light cattle to run on this summers' grass to make a yearling of. The market was not as active on the heavier, finishing type cattle as the CME Live Cattle futures didn't make gains until late week when the cash fed cattle market rose higher, topping at 202.50. Cattle feeder were given another dose of optimism as April Live Cattle shot up to 200.00. Cow/calf operators continue to sell their home raised cattle as they need to make room for this year's new crop that is arriving. More strings of backgrounded cattle starting to show up, buyers are very watchful of flesh condition as they will need cattle that can gain very efficiently as breakeven prices are high.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
