Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 1000 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher, over 1000 lbs steady. Feeder heifers under 800 lbs unevenly steady, over 800 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Very good demand for yearling steers and heifers this week as the CME Live Cattle futures staged a small recovery and came back off their lows, cash fed cattle traded higher as well. Cattle feeders were getting concerned last week as the futures contracts were retreating and cash fed cattle moved back towards 100.00, but as the winter months of the board came back and fat cattle market moved back toward 106.00 concerns were somewhat eased. Spring born calves are starting to show up in the East River auctions already, demand was good as there were plenty of buyers ready to buy them especially if they have had both rounds of vaccinations and weaned long enough to make them easier start than those right off the cow. Drought conditions remain across the state as rains did not materialize. Pastures are short and dry East River which is causing calves to be weaned early. West River calves not showing up early, conditions are dry but ranchers haven’t had to change their normal marketing schedules. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher, bulls steady.
