Compared to last week: Feeder steers 2.00 to 5.00 lower, instances of 6.00 to 7.00 lower. Feeder heifers 1.00 to 3.00 lower, instances of 5.00 to 6.00 lower. Demand remains good but the feeder market was under pressure this week as the CME Cattle contracts retreated. A lighter offering of yearlings was met by plenty of buyers ringside who were ready to get cattle bought and placed on feed. There was more caution displayed this week by those buyers but the market was still very active. The supply of yearlings are never great enough to satisfy the demand as so many cattle feeders would rather feed a yearling compared to a calf, but cattle feeders are getting nervous again as the CME Live Cattle contracts have slipped substantially, well below profitability. Packers took full advantage of the weakness of the board and lowered their bids all they way down to 102.00-105.00 and bought all the cattle they needed. Cattle feeders were really hopeful for the coming months of the fed cattle market, as evidenced by the stout feeder cattle market the last several weeks, but with this downturn in the board and cash trade there is great concern that large losses could continue. The dry, short grass conditions is forcing cattle off grass including spring born calves. The market on these calves was active as there were many buyers wanting to buy these light weight calves. The dollars per head cost is greatly cheaper than a 1,200.00 yearling and cash corn still remains very low, many elevators bidding below 3.00, giving buyers an incentive to buy a light calf and grow them. These calves have more options to market them than do a 900 lbs yearling who can only be put on a finishing ration. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher, bulls 2.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
