Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers steady to 2.00 lower. Demand remains good. A lighter offering of yearling steers and heifers. Cattle feeders eased off a bit in their pursuit of yearlings as futures contracts were under pressure this week, yet the market remains rather robust. Aug Live Cattle futures have retreated about 5.00 from last week’s levels, down to 102.00 and cash fed cattle reversed course and sold lower as well. Packers margins remain very positive as they have pushed the boxed beef market all the way up to 231.54 but they still managed to buy cattle cheaper as the futures contracts fizzled. There still has not been a big push of yearlings off grass yet as yearling operators are trying to keep their cattle turned out as long as they can hoping to maximize weight gain and increase their returns. Drought conditions have expanded across the state as hot and dry weather has continued. Cash corn remains below 3.00 at many country elevator locations, which is helping to support the feeder cattle market, but with the winter Live Cattle contracts at only 108.00 and 111.00 there is great concern that feedyard closeouts will show losses again. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 lower, bulls 2.00 lower.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
