Compared to last week: Feeder steers 2.00 to 5.00 higher, feeder heifers 1.00 to 2.00 higher, instances to 4.00 higher on 950-1000 lbs. Very good demand for yearling steers and heifers this week. The market was very active as cattle feeders are feeling much better about the prospects of the coming months of the cash fed cattle market as the spot cash market pushed up to 107.00-110.00 and 173.00 dressed. Packers have managed to run the boxed beef trade up to 225.00 and were willing to give more for fed cattle. The doom and gloom that hung over the market throughout the spring and summer has been replaced with a cautious optimism. Feed cost are very low as cash corn is lower than 2.80/bushel in many areas. Cattle feeders want to feed yearlings and the competition to buy them is great which results in very fast paced auctions. As the feeder cattle market improves yearling operators are closely watching the market and adjusting their marketing plans as profitability has returned and they want to maximize their returns. Dry conditions are expanding as the temps have remained above normal across the state and widespread rains have been lacking but cattle haven’t been forced off grass yet. Slaughter cows steady, bulls steady to 2.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
