Compared to last week: A much lighter offering of yearling steers and heifers, steady to 2.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Good to very good demand again as there are plenty of buyers who want to place yearlings on feed. The competition at the auction is great as the auction markets are on their summertime schedules with few having sizable sales on a weekly basis, most barns are seeing bigger sales about every other week. When there is strings of yearlings available, on any given day, there are always a lot of buyer on the seats who are eager to buy, as they know if they don't get some cattle bought that day they might have to wait a week or longer to have the chance again. The cash fed cattle market is performing much better than what many industry analyst or the CME Live Cattle contracts were predicting. As the daily cattle slaughter totals reach up to 120,000 there is much more optimism from the cattle feeder that profitability will return. The yearlings being offered currently are feedyard backgrounded as it is still too early yet to pull cattle off grass. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 lower, bulls steady.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
