Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 3.00 higher, feeder heifers 3.00 to 5.00 higher with a few instances of only steady. Good to very good demand for yearling steers and heifers. As the cash fed cattle market has managed to hold around 100.00 live basis and 160.00 dressed cattle feeders are feeling better about the coming months of the market, just a few short weeks ago there was much doom and gloom in the market as plants were shut down but that has quickly changed. The CME Live Cattle contracts had a really big week as gains of 5.00 were made between the advances seen on Wed and Thurs this week. With Dec nearly 110.00 and daily slaughter totals above 115,000 there is more hope among cattle feeders that better days lie ahead. The feeder cattle market was already very active and now with the futures higher there is even more interest in chasing the yearling market to secure some inventory. The flesh of the yearlings has been rather light and attractive, which really helps to sell cattle, and with cash corn only worth 2.80 at the local elevator there is plenty of incentive to gamble on feeding some yearlings versus giving it away at the elevator. This time of year sees sporadic offerings as few auction markets have sizable feeder sales on a weekly basis, so when there is a big offering the market is very active as cattle feeders know they need to act now or they might miss their chance to get cattle placed on feed that week. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 lower, bulls steady.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
