Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 900 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 higher, over 900 lbs 10.00 to 12.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 900 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher, over 900 lbs 7.00 to 10.00 higher. Good to very good demand this week for yearling steers and heifers. Demand really improved as the week went on, especially on the heaviest yearlings. Cash fed cattle in Iowa reached up to 101.50 live basis and 160.00 dressed which really helped to light a fire underneath the yearling market. The CME Live Cattle contracts had some life breathed into them as well, Dec rising all the way up to 107.00. This rise in the futures was desperately needed as cattle feeders have still been struggling with profitability. There weren't many auctions this week due to the Independence Day holiday on Saturday but the late week auctions that hosted a sale had some long strings of light fleshed yearlings and the market was extremely active. Cattle feeders are in dire need of cattle that will make a profit, feed costs are low and they would really like to buy some yearlings which is creating a great amount of competition. The yearlings being offered are primarily feedyard backgrounded, not off grass as it's rather early yet to pull yearlings off. Dry conditions West River but not severe enough yet , to force yearlings off grass. Slaughter cows 3.00 to 5.00 higher, bulls steady.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
