Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 650 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 lower, 650-800 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher, over 800 lbs steady to 4.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 750 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 lower, over 750 lbs 2.00 lower. Demand remains good for lighter weight cattle as this supply is much tighter than the backgrounded yearlings that are much more readily available. Demand moderate for the backgrounded yearlings, good at times if the flesh condition is light enough. The cash fed cattle market receded again this week, this is the fourth consecutive week of lower prices, which is keeping the brakes on the feeder cattle market. There is still a large supply of old crop corn yet that farmer feeders would like to feed, and they would sure prefer to feed a yearling compared to a calf, yet the Live Cattle futures contracts are not adding any support to their plans. Summer contracts are stuck at 96.00 and Dec at a mere 103.00, which doesn't allow for much wiggle room as they approach the feeder market. Cattle feeders still complain of how high the feeder market is while the feeder cattle producers see extremely tight margins and wonder why they are taking on all of the risk and work to merely breakeven or to lose money. Breakeven prices for fed cattle are troublesome as so much equity has been drained from cattle feeders operations that more losses simply cannot be sustained. There is a lot of competition to buy feeder cattle yet there is hardly any competition when those same producers try to sell their finished cattle. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 4.00 higher as packers are buying cows in preparation for the Independence Day holiday quickly approaching, bulls 2.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
