Compared to last week: Feeder steers 2.00 to 6.00 lower, except 500-550 lbs and 600-650 lbs 5.00 to 7.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 750 lbs 2.00 to 6.00 higher, over 750 lbs 1.00 to 2.00 lower. Very good demand for light weight cattle to background, either on grass or in a yard, more moderate demand this week for the heavier cattle that are suitable only for finishing. The cash fed cattle market turned lower, down to 103.00 live and 165.00 dressed , and the CME Live Cattle futures contracts are all below 100.00, except Dec and beyond. Cattle feeders treaded very carefully due to this fact. The light cattle to background are hard to find, which really helps to make the market very active for that class of cattle. There were a lot of backgrounded yearlings offered for sale this week which allowed buyers to back off in their pursuit of feeder cattle and try to get them bought in line with where the board is predicting the fat market will go. Daily cattle slaughter has reached, all the way up to 117,000, but that is still 6,000 head a day shy of last year's totals. Carcass weights are much heavier than last year, putting more meat tonnage on the market. New crop, calf fed fats are ready and starting to show up, on top of the backlogged cattle which is allowing the packer to bid much lower at times, and still get cattle bought. Packer margins are still vary favorable, even as boxed beef prices continue to retreat as quickly as they rose, but cattle feeders are finding it difficult to get all of their cattle sold. In spite of all of these headwinds the cattle feeder faces, corn is still only worth around 2.80/bushel delivered to the elevator which makes for cheap costs of gain. The competition is still very high at the auction and the age old battle of trying to get cattle bought with a workable breakeven price continues. Good rains fell across the state this week, along with plenty of sunshine and warm weather helping to push grass growth to hopefully make for a good grazing season across South Dakota. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 3.00 higher, bulls steady.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
