Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers steady to 2.00 higher, few instances of 3.00 to 5.00 higher on light fleshed heifers. Demand was good for yearling steers and heifers this week. There were some long strings offered and the market was very active. We have entered the time of year where the feeder sales become more sporadic and cattle feeders need to strike while the cattle are offered or it could be a couple of weeks before they get the chance again. If the cattle are in light flesh then the market activity really picks up. Breakeven prices for these cattle being bought are running higher than where the CME Live Cattle contracts are predicting as the competition for feeders is great. Cost of gains are low, but with the futures contracts in the mid 90s for the summer months and a couple of dollars on either side of 100.00 for the fall and winter months those price levels don't allow for a very robust feeder cattle market. Cash fed cattle continue to grind lower, as do the futures, which is weighing heavily on the minds of cattle feeders. Slaughter cows and bulls 2.00 to 4.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
