Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 4.00 higher, heifers steady to 3.00 higher with instances of 6.00 to 7.00 higher on 550-650 lbs. Very good demand for light weight yearlings and calves, moderate to good demand for heavier cattle bound for finishing yards. The supply of light cattle is tight, and will get tighter as it does every year which is keeping the market very active for this class of cattle. The heavier backgrounded cattle are in much more plentiful supply and are facing a finishing date with a futures contract price much lower than the current fed cattle market. Cattle feeders are very wary of getting out front of this market as they have been stung terribly by this recent downturn. Daily slaughter totals have now reached above 100,000 and the fed cattle market as reached 120.00 live and 190.00 dressed but that volume is still very limited. Cattle feeders report that maybe they can sell a single load that high but the rest of the pen is bought at a lower price, some still report that they cannot get a bid on their market ready cattle at all. The feeder market has gotten quite a little higher than what it was two months ago when this began, which has caused the backgrounders to offer their cattle for sale. There is little left over of their sale proceeds to show much, if any profit but it's a better price now than what it was and they have now decided it's time to sell. The corn is in the ground, beans too, and a nice rain and warmer temps have the crop up and going. Those farmer feeders would like to have some cattle to feed, especially those that still have old crop corn in the bin that is still worth less than 2.90 a bushel. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, bulls 4.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
