Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 4.00 higher, few instances to 5.00 higher. Feeder heifers mostly steady. Very good demand for lightweight calves and yearlings, moderate to good demand for backgrounded yearlings bound for finishing. There were many buyers at the auctions this week looking to buy light cattle to feed or run on grass, the market was very active on this class of cattle. The market was not near as active on the bigger cattle that will head into feedyards to be fed a finishing ration. The common notion was to expect the cattle feeder to be very gung ho on chasing the feeder cattle market after the cash fed cattle market reached 120.00 but the volume of cattle actually sold remains very light. These cattle feeders are still having difficulty even getting a bid on their cattle. Daily slaughter totals are increasing with each passing day as more plants come back on line but yet the totals are still reduced from where they historically would be for this time of year. The daily reduction now is about 16,000 cattle fewer than what would be normally killed. With a large backlog of cattle to be sold and killed and much larger supplies of fed cattle on the way cattle feeders are very cautious about how far they are willing to get out in front of this market. Farmer feeders still have last year's corn they can feed, as they haven't sold it all as currently the bids at the elevators are in the 2.60-2.80 per bushel range. But the crux of the matter is the uncertainty of the coming months of the fed cattle market. Many are hoping for a vast improvement in the market but the CME Live Cattle contracts are not supportive to that notion as they are all below 100.00. New crop calf fed cattle are becoming market ready now but without getting them sold and gone they can't add new replacements to the pen. Auction receipts were rather large for this time of year as more feeder cattle producers are now selling their cattle as the feeder market has improved substantially since this downturn began two months ago. Slaughter cows sold steady, bulls too lightly tested last week for comparison but a lower undertone was evident.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
