Compared to last week: Feeder steers 2.00 to 5.00 higher, except 600-650 lbs and 700-750 lbs 7.00 to 9.00 higher. Feeder heifers 3.00 to 5.00 higher. Moderate to good demand this week, the best demand by far remains on those light calves suitable for backgrounding. The heavier weight, backgrounded cattle find far fewer outlets and are much harder to sell but the market for these cattle was rather active compared to what it's been like in recent weeks. There are many buyers for the light cattle as these cattle cost fewer dollars per head and will reach finished weights at a much later time. Cattle feeders that have market ready fat cattle are still having a tough time getting a bid, even though the cash market was substantially higher as live prices reached 117.00 and dressed at 185.00. This pop in the fat market occurred early in the week which helped turn around Monday's limit lower close, Tues saw an expanded limit close but Wednesday the bearishness returned to the board as it closed more than 3.00 lower. There were a lot of yearlings in the offering this week as those backgrounders have chosen to sell cattle now. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 lower, bulls not well compared.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
