Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 600 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher, over 600 lbs steady to 2.00 higher except 1000-1050 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 higher. Feeder heifers steady to 3.00 higher. Good demand for cattle under 700 lbs, as these cattle can be backgrounded or fed but will reach finished weights at a much later date than those heavier cattle. Moderate demand for those backgrounded yearlings that were offered this week, many long strings of them are being offered as those producers have delayed their marketing about as long as they could. Many cattle feeders report that they can't get a bid on their fat cattle as negotiated cash sales are extremely limited as packers are relying on their customers that have a formula marketing agreement to get their needs met. Cash sales at 95.00 live and 150.00-156.00 this week is all, but in spite of all of this there was a much improved interest this week from farmer feeders to buy cattle. The CME Live Cattle contracts finally woke up and came to life as they posted limit gains on Wednesday and followed that up with expanded limit gains on Thursday. This was a very positive change for the mentality of the cattle producers as the futures contracts have seemed to be stuck at a worst case possible scenario every week. The incredibly weak basis finally narrowed some. Slowly increasing slaughter rates helped to push the futures contracts higher as some plants are coming back online, yet there was another plant in Nebraska that closed on Monday. Cattle producers are feeling a great amount of angst as they are faced with huge losses and financial ruin while packers are making huge profits as exhibited by the boxed beef trading at prices no one ever thought possible. There is great demand for beef and someone needs to raise and finish the animals but if there is nothing but financial loss for this sector of the industry how can the industry survive? Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher, bulls not well compared.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
