Compared to last week: Feeder steers 2.00 to 4.00 lower, instances to 8.00 lower on 600-650 lbs. Feeder heifers steady to 2.00 lower. Demand only moderate. Once again this week demand was best for light weight steers and heifers as buyers of this class of cattle will be marketing their stock in a later time period. The heavier weight cattle that will reach finished weights in the last half of the year are finding far fewer outlets. These cattle feeders are very uncertain as how to proceed when buying cattle. The current basis was 10.00 to 15.00 cash over the futures this week leaving them wondering how long this unacceptably wide basis will continue? The futures contracts were designed to provide risk management but how can it do that when the futures contracts don't accurately reflect the current market? What is the current fat cattle market? Dressed steers ranged from 147.00-160.00, another very wide range this week. While Choice boxed beef sells at 367.56 is the best cattle feeders can hope for is 160.00 dressed? Many cattle feeders report they can't even get a bid, and then concerning cattle they sold in recent weeks ago they can't get a date to get them slaughtered. Cattle feeders have always been optimists, always looking ahead for a better market to come but with this much market dis-function, piled on top of the extreme amount of equity lost in less than 12 months, they are wondering how they will survive. Cattle producers that have been waiting on marketing are now selling as big strings of backgrounded yearlings are starting to be offered at the auctions. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 5.00 higher, full advance on the Lean cows, bulls sold with higher undertones.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
