Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 700 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 lower, 700-850 lbs steady to 1.00 lower, over 850 lbs steady to 3.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 700 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 lower, except 600-650 lbs 6.00 to 7.00 higher, over 700 lbs steady to 3.00 lower with instances to 5.00 lower on 950 lbs. The market was very uneven this week as last week's cash fed cattle market was very unclear as live sales ranged from 95.00-105.00 on Friday. Cattle feeders are being pummeled by the fat market as the futures dropped by triple digits everyday this week and packers buying very few cattle. Outgoing fed cattle are losing a great amount of money and the new crop calf feds that will be reaching finished weights look to lose as well. These calves were bought much cheaper last fall but will still not make any money as the futures contracts for this summer have retreated into the 80s. Packers have managed to push the boxed beef market well above the record high price achieved in 2015 when fat cattle were worth 170.00. Choice boxed beef at 284.29 currently while fat cattle were bought as low as 148.00 dressed this week which leaves a 1224.00 price spread on a 900 lb carcass. With price disparity like this cattle producers are left wondering if they have a future in the beef industry as cattle prices plummet while beef prices have skyrocketed, which has happened twice in less than a year. Feeder cattle producers need to sell last year's calves to make room for this year and more have decided to do that as they have less hope now that the feeder market will improve much. The feeder cattle auctions were pretty active considering all of the negative factors at work, most active on cattle that can go to grass. Cattle feeders with empty pens want to buy cattle but with a futures board that drops so quickly they can't buy cattle that can be hedged against the board. Slaughter cows 2.00 lower, bulls not well tested.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
