Compared to last week: Very few feeder cattle offered in the auctions this week, too few to make a good, complete comparison with last week's much larger offering. Demand only moderate on light cattle for backgrounding, light demand for heavier cattle suitable for finishing. As the CME Live Cattle contracts made huge, expanded limit moves throughout the week cattle producers and cattle feeders are left reeling and not knowing how to proceed. The cattle producers who are able to delay their marketings are doing so, refusing to sell their stock during a time of turmoil in the markets. The cash fed cattle market was lower again but still remains more than 10.00 over April Live Cattle futures which is making it incredibly difficult for cattle feeders to make decisions on buying feeder cattle. With Jun and Aug Live Cattle around 80.00 large losses will occur for cattle placed on feed as calves last fall. Cattle feeders have much anxiety about their ability to withstand another year of equity drain. Feeder cattle producers have the same worry as the feeder market reaches price levels below their costs of production. Slaughter cows 5.00 to 6.00 lower, bulls not well tested but a lower undertone evident.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
