Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 850 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 lower, over 850 lbs 10.00 to 17.00 lower. Feeder heifers 6.00 to 11.00 lower. Light to moderate demand this week, best demand remains on lighter weight cattle that have more time and options before they reach finished weights. Demand on the heavy weight cattle has really slackened as the CME Live Cattle futures have now dropped into the mid 80.00 range. Feeder cattle producers are needing to sell their cattle but with the futures contracts collapsing, and the cash markets following along, they are facing large losses. Cattle feeders have to buy cattle cheaper but when the board drops by the daily limits they simply can't get cattle bought cheap enough. As the market declines cattle that look to have higher feed costs associated with them because of heavier flesh condition, or smaller frame size are being discounted heavily. The market stays pretty active, albeit at lower price levels, for light weight cattle as this supply is always tight up here this time of year. Slaughter cows and bulls were sharply lower this week, 13.00 to 15.00 lower.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
