Compared to last week: Feeder steers 10.00 to 15.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 700 lbs 5.00 to 8.00 higher, over 700 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher. Very good demand for all weights of feeder cattle this week as the CME Live Cattle futures finally stopped their implosion and posted limit higher gains for the first two days of the week. Cash fed cattle shot up to 120.00 which was just what the cattle feeder needed to give them a glimpse of hope for the future. Cattle producers have been facing large losses, on feeder cattle and fat cattle, if they have had to sell the prior two weeks. Feeder cattle producers just shut their gates and refused to sell, during this period of market chaos, instead choosing to wait a few weeks and hope the market could stabilize. The market did stabilize this week and came roaring back to where it was before the meltdown in the futures complex began a few weeks ago. Cattle feeders were willing to give more for feeder cattle as packers relented and finally bid higher for fat cattle. This was a critical week for the cattle feeding industry as many cattle feeders simply do not have the equity to withstand more losses. This is the second sharp downturn in less than 12 months, and at a time of year that we normally see the highest prices of the year for fat cattle. The Live Cattle futures turned to limit lower losses again on Thursday but the cash feeder cattle market kept rolling along at sharply higher levels. Slaughter cows 4.00 to 6.00 higher this week as packers scramble to find cows to meet the great demand for ground beef currently, bulls not well tested last week for comparison.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
