Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Good to very good demand for yearling steers and heifers, whether they were off grass or out of backgrounding yards there were plenty of buyers on the seats eagerly bidding. As the fed cattle market rebounded the last few weeks, and the futures following along, cattle feeders are feeling much better about the coming months in the fat market. The competition to buy a yearling off grass is great, as there does not seem to be a large supply of these cattle this year. Cattle feeders look to have a plentiful supply of wet corn to feed this year as the heat that was needed to dry the crop is now gone as heavy rains and much below normal temps have now set in. This week saw the first offering of spring born calves, demand was light to moderate as many cattle feeders aren't ready to receive a bawling calf. Calves that were not fully preconditioned were hard to sell, requiring the auctioneer to back up a long ways before a bid could be found. As the weather has gone from warm and humid to wet, muddy, and cool in a matter of a couple of days the risk of an outbreak of pneumonia is simply more than many are willing to take on. Calves that have received their fall booster shots were easier to sell but still the market is not very active and substantially lower than last year's market. Cattle feeders continue to struggle with profitability, rising Live Cattle futures contracts are higher but breakeven prices are quite a little higher than the futures. Much larger calf offering next week as the western SD calves start to come to town. Heavy rains at midweek caused quite a few cancellations of calves as roads were too muddy to get cattle hauled to town. Slaughter cows uneven, Breaker cows mostly steady, Boner and Lean cows 2.00 to 5.00 higher, bulls 2.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
