Compared to last week: Feeder steers 5.00 to 10.00 higher, feeder heifers 2.00 to 6.00 higher. Good demand this week for yearling steers and heifers after the CME Live Cattle contracts finally found a support level and traded higher. This was a major boon to the pyschology of the cattle feeders after they were left reeling from the 4th quarter contracts dropping below 100.00. Cash fed cattle trade improved as well and moved back up to and above the 100.00 mark. The drain of capital from cattle feeders has been extreme as they have struggled all summer to achieve profitability. Surprisingly the feeder cattle market is active at the auctions as outgoing fed cattle continue to lose money. The maturity of the corn crop in the trade region is a major concern as more warm, drying days are needed but the forecast looks for wet and cooler instead. As grass has been abundant, and no frost yet, there has been no need to pull yearlings off grass and get them sold before they start to lose pounds without supplemental feed. These feeder cattle producers aren't anxious to sell cattle yet as they hope for a continued rally that will leave them with a positive return on their investment they have made. Slaughter cows and bulls steady to 3.00 lower.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
