Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers 5.00 to 10.00 lower. Moderate demand for yearling steers and heifers overall, yet still good at times for light fleshed cattle right off grass. Cattle feeders are eager to place yearlings in their yards as they look to have a plentiful supply of feed this year but with the current cash fed cattle market and a very weak outlook from the futures contracts there is much concern that feeder cattle can't be bought cheap enough to breakeven, let alone make a profit. Outgoing fed cattle continue to lose a large amount of money yet there is still a lot of interest in feeding cattle, but at the right market price. The crowds are large at the auctions and the market is rather active but many buyers aren't able to get cattle bought as the market is higher than where they feel comfortable getting in at. Silage harvest has yet to begin as corn is still very green and needing more drying weather, which has been elusive this week as extremely heavy rains came along with flash flooding. Feeder cattle producers are hesistant to sell cattle currently as the feeder cattle market is not high enough to generate a positive return for them. A 5.00 gain on the Live Cattle contracts helped to support the feeder market some but still it has a long ways to go before cattle feeders can find profitability. Slaughter cows steady to weak with Lean cows 3.00 to 4.00, bulls steady to 2.00 lower.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
