Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 3.00 lower, instances of 4.00 to 6.00 lower on 650-700 lbs and 750-800 lbs. Feeder heifers steady to 2.00 lower. Moderate to good demand for steers and heifers this week. Farmer feeders finished their planting and were in town ready to buy cattle this week. Another auction market hosted a special free bbq feeder cattle sale that featured many long strings of yearlings and fall calves. Feeder cattle offerings get very sporadic this time of year and a special sale like this is a great way to get a lot of buyers on the seats and cattle in the yards. The market was active this week in spite of more weakness seen in the cattle futures contracts. Cattle feeders continue to struggle with trying to sell their fed cattle and not have to accept lower money to do it. Corn futures are much higher than they were two months ago, forage costs have remained high, and the Live Cattle futures are dangerously close to 1.00 for the Aug contract. Even though there is plenty of adversity to overcome to reach profitability there were plenty of buyers in town all week looking to get cattle bought. Much lighter auction receipts expected for next week which was a factor for the strength of this last weeks' feeder market. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 lower, bulls 1.00 to 2.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
