Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Much improved demand this week after the CME Live Cattle contracts posted a nearly limit higher gain on Monday, yet cattle feeders are still approaching the feeder market cautiously . Flesh condition of cattle has really been attractive after the cold, wet, muddy conditions cattle have had to endure. The backgrounders who kept their cattle over the winter to market them now are extremely disappointed as the dollars per head they are bringing are not enough to reach profitablity. The cattle feeder selling fed cattle is facing the same battle and are keeping their eyes locked on the futures contracts looking for way forward. As farmer feeders have had such a hard time getting their crops planted, many were not able to get all of their acres planted, and losses realized on outgoing cattle, there has not been a sense of urgency to replace these cattle. Cattle feeders have really been struggling with selling their fed cattle as packers make lower bids early in the week and are able to get enough cattle bought to maintain their market leverage. Boxed beef prices have fared very well, with Choice boxes in the 222.00 range, yet packers have been unwilling to let the cattle feeder get his head above water. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, bulls steady.
