Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 950 lbs rather steady, over 950 lbs steady to 3.00 lower. Feeder heifers 3.00 to 5.00 lower, except for 650-750 lbs mostly steady. Demand light to moderate, best demand again on those lighter weight cattle that are suitable for backgrounding as this supply is much more limited. The heavier cattle that are bound for feedyards remain under pressure as the CME cattle futures fail to offer much support to the spot market for either feeder cattle or fed cattle. Farmer feeders were busy in the field trying to get their crop in before it's simply too late, buyer attendance was lighter at the auctions because of this. The market was active on cattle 800 lbs, much slower on the heavier cattle. These lighter cattle will come to market again, either as a yearling or a finished animal, later in the year or next spring where the futures market is dollars higher than the spot month which is really helping to support the market at these levels. Corn futures were lower this week, in spite of many unplanted acres, but cattle feeders are still wary of feed costs being much higher this year and are taking this into account when purchasing feeder cattle Packers started the week with lower bids again and were accepted by southern plains feeders, northern feeders weren't as quick to roll over but eventually lower sales did materialize. Boxed beef prices remain robust, considering the near 40.00 spread between Choice boxes and Choice live steers. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher, bulls steady.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
