Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Quality this week was mostly plain to

average and significantly lower than last weeks offering. Consignments were offered in mostly small packages or as singles. Buyers showed

mostly light to moderate demand for light offerings. CME positions moved mostly sideways this week. Boxed beef prices continue to fall as

more and more product is available for retailers to purchase. Lower box prices have packers offering lower money for finished cattle. As of

Thursdays settlement the August feeder cattle contract closed at 132.975 which is 0.80 higher than last Thursdays close. Market activity this

week was mostly slow. Weigh up cows comprised most of the sales volume again this week. Branding season is still underway and ranchers

continue to market cull cows. Cow quality this week was average to very attractive. Unlike the last few weeks which have been driven by

feeding buyer demand this weeks market was driven by slaughter cow demand. Fewer feeding cow buyers were seen this week allowing

packers to purchase a larger portion of the cow offering. Slaughter cows sold unevenly steady from 1.00 lower to 1.00 higher. Feeding cows

sold steady to weak with fewer market participants seen this week. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 2.00 lower on a lower quality and lower

yielding offering compared to last week. Slaughter through Thursday was 478,000 head compared to 467,000 head last week and 485,000

head last year. Young age cows suitable to feed or re-breed sold mostly 5.00-8.00 lower. Lighter demand continues to be seen for re-breed

type cows which allowed prices to move lower. Quality was average.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
