Compared to two weeks ago: Feeder steers were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to higher

undertones were noticed. The best test for feeder heifers was for 650-749 lbs which sold mostly 3.00-6.00 lower. All other feeder heifers

were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady undertones were noticed. Quality this week was mostly average.

Demand this week was mostly moderate for light to moderate offerings. Export buyers continue to purchase cattle to ship north to Canada.

CME positions slid lower this week as they followed box beef prices which have slid sharply lower over the last two weeks. As of Thursdays

settlement the August feeder cattle contract closed at 132.175 which is 2.55 lower than last Thursdays close. Market activity this week was

mostly moderate. Weigh up cows comprised most of the sales volume this week with branding season still in full swing. Cow quality this week

was average to very attractive. Feeding buyers were very aggressive early in the week, however as the week progressed demand did diminish

as feeding buyers have been very aggressive over the last few weeks and have amassed large supplies. The cow cutout slid sharply lower this

week too as slaughter volumes are close to seasonal levels. Slaughter cows sold unevenly steady from 1.00 lower to 2.00 higher on all classes

of cows. Feeding cows sold unevenly steady as well from 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold steady to firm on a very attractive

offering. Slaughter through Thursday was 467,000 head compared to 457,000 head last week and 487,000 head last year. Young age cows

suitable to feed or re-breed sold steady to 3.00 lower. Lighter demand continues to be seen for re-breed type cows which allowed prices to

move lower. Quality was average.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
