Compared to last week: Yearling steers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Yearling heifers sold generally steady in a narrow comparison. All steer calves sold unevenly steady this session. Heifer calves weighing less than 450 lbs sold unevenly steady, 450-699 lbs sold mostly steady to 3.00 lower. Quality was mostly average to attracted however it did vary throughout the week. Calves with two rounds of preconditioning shots sold with the best demand this week, with premiums for fully reconditioned calves varying from 8.00-18.00 per head and mostly 8.00-12.00. Several buyers showed no interest for non-preconditioned calves no matter how much they were discounted. Feedlot ready calves sold with lighter demand overall this week as feeders in the corn-belt are still really wet and many are still busy with harvest and are not ready to receive calves. CME positions continue to improve this week. The April contract settled at 121.70 as of Thursdays close. Market activity this week was mostly moderate to active. Weigh up cows sold on mostly very light to moderate demand. Packers showed mostly very light to light demand for slaughter cows this week. Seasonally heavy slaughter cow markings have packer's shackle space full. As a result packers opted to feed the majority of cows on offer, sending only sent the poorest cows to slaughter this week. Slaughter cows sold mostly 8.00-12.00 lower again this week. Demand for high quality feeding cows was mostly good while thin or smaller framed cows sold on light demand. Feeding cows sold unevenly steady as high quality fleshy cows sold steady to 1.00 higher and thin or light weight cows sold sold sharply lower. Slaughter bulls sold on mixed demand as yielding conditions and fill varied greatly this week. Slaughter bulls sold unevenly steady. Young age cows suitable to re-breed sold on light to moderate demand. These offerings sold steady to weak in a narrow comparison.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
