Compared to last week: Yearling steers sold unevenly steady on a mixed quality offering. Yearling heifers 800-1049 lbs sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher, with the exception of 950-999 lbs heifers which sold mostly 1.00-3.00 lower. Steer calves weighing less than 400 lbs sold mostly 15.00-25.00 higher, 400-449 lbs sold mostly 5.00-10.00 higher, 450-649 lbs sold mostly steady to 4.00 higher. Heifer calves under 400 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed; 400-599 lbs sold mostly 4.00-6.00 higher. Yearling cattle sold on mostly moderate to good demand for light to moderate offerings. Calves sold on mostly moderate to good demand for heavy offerings. Quality this week was mixed for yearlings, while calves were of mostly average to attractive quality. Yearling cattle were offered in mostly small packages this week no load lots on offer. Several load lots of calves were seen this week. Demand for load lots was mostly good while demand for packages was mostly moderate to good. Calves were in light to moderate flesh. Calves are in noticeably lighter flesh this year as most of the state has seen one to two major snow storms already this fall. The best demand for calves was for lightweight calves under 475 lbs suitable to run on grass or heavyweight calves, over 600 lbs which can be pushed to finish against the April live cattle contract. CME positions continue to improve as packers have paid higher money for slaughter cattle over the last few weeks. This week every sale had a large crowd on hand of both order buyers and farmer feeders. Market activity was mostly active as a result. Weigh up cows sold on mostly very light to moderate demand for mostly moderate to heavy offerings. Packers showed very light demand for slaughter cows this week as supplies of cows coming to market are at their seasonal high. Cows started the week fully steady with last weeks prices however by mid-week demand from packers lightened drastically. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady to sharply lower with sales as low as 12.00 lower by the end of the week on boning and lean cows. Breaking cows sold mostly 2.00 to 4.00 higher early in the week, however packers put most of these offerings on feed from midweek on and purchased them sharply lower. Slaughter bulls sold mostly 4.00 lower. Young age cows suitable to re-breed sold on mostly moderate to good demand. These offerings sold mostly 6.00 higher on stronger interest from buyers and a higher quality offering.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
