Compared to last week: The best test for yearling steers was for 900-949 lbs which sold mostly 1.00-4.00 higher, all other weights were too lightly tested to trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Yearling heifers 800-899 lbs sold mostly 2.00-3.00 lower, heifers 900-999 lbs sold mostly steady to 1.00 lower. All spring born calves were too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however unevenly steady undertones were noticed. Demand was mostly moderate to good for yearlings and light to moderate for calves on light to moderate offerings. CME positions continue to improve this week giving buyers increased confidence as they bid on offerings. The April live cattle contract improved to over 120.00; the last time the April traded over 120.00 was July 26th. Yearling quality was average to attractive, while calf quality was mostly plain to average. A strong cold front swept across the state on Tuesday and a strong snow storm was seen Wednesday which dumped heavy wet snow across central portions of the state. With changing weather conditions seen, buyers were hesitant while buying calves. Many calves looked stressed this week which created very uneven demand throughout this weeks sales. Most offerings are coming straight off grass and are in light flesh. Market activity this week was mostly active with some of the largest crowds of buyers seen this fall. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand throughout the week as packers searched for offerings for immediate harvest. Packers continue to be aggressive as they pushed each other in search of offerings for immediate harvest. Packers also have started to put cows away on feed as they prepare for the lightened holiday slaughter weeks. Notably, packers have started to put short term feeding cows away on feed earlier this year than the past few years. Slaughter cows sold steady to 1.00 lower. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 2.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Cow and bull quality this week was average to attractive. Weigh up conditions were average to

above average for buyers this week. Young cows suitable to re-breed sold on moderate demand this week. These offerings sold generally steady.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
