Compared to last week, feeders sold 10.00-20.00 higher with most of the gains showing up early in the week. Mid-week saw another sell off with the futures markets and later week auctions generally did not see the gains picked up earlier in the week. Markets are extremely volatile and nervous with nearly anything seeming to result in swift and big price swings in one direction or the other. Until recently cash markets had been ignoring most of the outside noise caused by headlines and rumors but lately that has become harder to do with the sizes of the reactions, especially on the down swings which has made it a big challenge trying to deal with risk protection on new stock. The supply of feeders was moderate with calves still making up the majority of offering. Overall demand is good. Buyers still placing bids in accordance with associated health risk. The first real cold of the year came over the weekend, which should help some of the fall health problems even though a warm-up is expected to follow. A few stick out sales this week included 20 head of 412 lb. steers at South Central Regional Stockyards which sold for 470.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 45 head of 509 lb. steers for 460.00 and 94 head of 758 lbs. steers for 385.00. Green City Livestock Market sold 31 head of 552 lb. steers for 436.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 65 head of 817 lb. steers for 370.00 and 114 head of 852 lb. steers for 354.00. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 33 head of 609 lb. steers for 421.00, 78 head of 733 lb. steers for 376.00, as well as 65 head of 541 lb. heifers which brought 423.00. Another stick out sale of heifers at Kingsville Livestock auction was a load of 718 lb. heifers at 355.50. Boxed beef cutout values closed mixed for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 376.40, down 1.53 and select closed at 361.09, up 2.44 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday afternoons report came in just a over 73K head. Significant trade developed on Wednesday this week. Live sales in the south were reported mostly 230.00-232.00, in the north mostly 228.00-230.50 and dressed sales 355.00-360.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 5369 head with a weighted average weight of 538.62 lbs. and a price value of 399.64, 20.73 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 26.94.
