Compared to last week, feeders sold very uneven but overall, the market was mostly 5.00-10.00 higher gaining back last week's losses. There were some instances of steer calves being sharply higher. Currently the market is completely dependent upon health risk associated with each consignment. It sounds like a broken record this time of year, but keeping calves healthy is a huge challenge as nights get down in the high 40's to low 50's and days began wet and cool before climbing into the 80's which is a not a good recipe for anything. Calves without shots or short weaned are seeing severe discounts and will continue to see those until a good frost and more stable cooler temperatures. Some rains over the last week helped to keep grass green, and growing a bit and perhaps even settle dust for a bit. Moisture levels in the subsoil however remain very low. Although states to the west are setting the fall run here in MO it hasn't really gotten under way yet as many producers who also farm grain are mostly focused on harvest. The CME feeder cattle index climbed and posted an all-time new record high again late week. And a several barns around the state did post a few records or very near record sales once again. A few stick out sales this week included: 28 head of 412 lb. steers at Windsor Livestock Auction that sold for 520.00 and 79 head of 509 lb. steers that brought 495.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 20 head of 648 lbs. steers for 438.00, 223 head of 769 lb. steers for 403.00 and 90 head of 813 lbs. steers for 370.00. Four State Stockyards sold 29 head of 706 lb. steers for 406.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 50 head of 958 lb. steers for 352.75. On the heifer side of the market Lolli Brother Livestock Market sold 40 head of 524 lb. heifers for 425.00. South Central Regional Stockyards sold 120 head of 702 lb. heifers for 367.00. Boxed beef cutout values may have finally found a bottom as small gains were posted for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 366.57, up 3.30 and select closed at 346.39, up 1.01 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday afternoons report came in just a over 28K head. Trade was slow to develop this week, and likely more sales took place after the report cutoff. Trade in the south was very limited and only moderate in the north. Price levels were higher with live sales reported 230.00-235.00 and dressed sales mostly 362.00-364.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3395 head with a weighted average weight of 537.69 lbs. and a price value of 424.03, 6.61 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 35.36.
