Compared to last week, feeders sold mostly steady to firm. The shorten holiday week didn't provide a very good test of the markets as many barns were closed and most others had very light offerings. Demand remains very good, and buyers seemly just want to own cattle. That being said, some buyers are starting to discount those calves that have more health risk. If history is any indicator these discounts will increase in the coming weeks as weather gets more variable. The lack of any widespread or significant rains is becoming concerning and there were several reports of hay feeding taking place now, mostly in south central parts of the state. Abundant rain and lush pastures though the month of July were a saving grace this year and most farmers that are feeding are doing so in an effort to manage pastures wisely, so that when it does rain, they will bounce back. Even with the lighter offering there were still some stick out sales at barns around the state. Ozark Regional Stockyards sold 37 head of 510 lb. steers for 457.50. Green City Livestock Market sold a load of 770 lb. steers for 390.50 and another load of 861 lb. steers for 368.75.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold a load of 824 lb. steers for 373.00. On the heifer side of the market Green City Livestock Market sold 45 head of 678 lb. heifers for 390.00 and a full load of 819 lb. heifers for 342.75. Boxed beef cutout values were lower for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 410.76 down 4.65 and select closed at 385.19, down 4.81 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday afternoons report totaled just under 66K head for the week. Trade in the south was 242.00-243.00 live. In the North lives sales were reported mostly at 242.00-243.00 which was lower for the week and erasing any premium the north had been carrying. Dressed sales were reported at mostly 383.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 1135 head with a weighted average weight of 535.15 lbs. and a price value of 436.83, 1.16 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 45.82.
