Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 10.00 higher, with some instances 20.00 higher on some lighter weight calves. The supply of feeders was moderate but made up of mostly heavier weight cattle this week with 67% of the feeder offering over 600 lbs. Most of the calves under 550 lbs. came to town as small groups with very few drafts over 20 head. Condition and health programs are becoming more important each day although some producers are still getting by without complete weaning or shot programs as long as calves don't have to much hair or flesh. Once weather swings start to arrive in a few weeks buyers will get more and more picky, and discounts will become more extreme as health risk increase. As a whole the cash markets at the auctions have ignored the volatility and extreme trading ranges seen in the futures markets and just continue to push higher each day as concerns about limited supplies are becoming more and more valid. Both the CME feeder index and the MO Stocker Formula set new records this past week, and nearly every barn sold some weight or class of cattle at a new barn record at a minimum with some seeing multiple records fall. Drought conditions are showing back up in the southern part of the state, but a few spots did get a shower over the weekend. Given that it is late Aug even the dry spots look better than most years at this time. Stick out sales this week included 30 head of 501 lb. steers at Springfield Livestock Marketing Center which sold for 442.00 and a load of 742 lb. steers for 382.50. Ozarks Regional Stockyards sold a load of 573 lb. steers for 442.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 45 head of 635 lb. steers for 422.00. F & T Livestock Market sold 27 head of 655 lb. steers for 412.75 and 22 head of 758 lb. steers for 375.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold a load of 803 lb. steers for 348.00. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold a load of 922 lb. steers for 338.00. On the heifer side of the market Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold a load of 637 lb. heifers for 383.50 and a load of 695 lb. heifers for 363.50. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 113 head of 726 lb. heifers for 348.50 and the biggest draft of the week 719 head of 810 lb. heifers for 334.00. Boxed beef cutout values were sharply higher for the week, choice closed on Friday at 400.57, up 21.73 and select closed at 370.76, up 15.67 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday afternoons report totaled just under 53K for the week. Trade in the south was very limited with a few sales in KS at 237.00 live. In the North lives sales were reported from 238.00-245.00 and dressed sales from 380.00-385.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 2738 head with a weighted average weight of 556.97 lbs. and a price value of 415.79, 0.59 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 39.64 per cwt.
