Compared to the light test from last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was light as heavy rains once again limited auction volume combined with several of the northern sales already being on an off-schedule week. The majority of the feeder offering was calves this week with many fresh off of the cow and unweaned. Demand was good to very good as buyers continue to aggressively try to fill orders and keep prices in record territory. Ample moisture for most areas of the state has grass eager for more sunshine in order to really take off. The latest drought monitor finally showed significant improvement with most of the state drought free and just under 12 percent remaining listed as abnormally dry. Planting has been slow due to rains which seem to be spaced just right to prevent many fields from drying enough to get over. As of the start of last week 33 percent of corn and 15 percent of beans had been planted. A few stick out sales this week included 25 head of 455 lb. steers at Kingsville Livestock Auction which sold for 440.50, 22 head of 513 lb. steers for 421.00 and a full load of 807 lb. steers for 299.00. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 35 head of 702 lb. steers for 331.50, a full load of 859 lb. steers for 290.50 and 41 head of 969 lb. steers for 269.50. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 22 head of 557 lb. steers for 405.00. Tina Livestock Auction had 34 head of 610 lb. steers which brought 363.00. On the heifer side Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 35 head of 506 lbs. fancy heifers for 378.50 and a full load of 709 lb. heifers at 310.00. Boxed beef cutouts were higher for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 336.48, up 4.96 and Select closed at 320.11, up 5.56 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales were very slow to develop just under 14K head were reported as of the 2:00 report cutoff time Friday afternoon. Almost certain there was significant volume that occurred after the deadline to report that will show up on the weekly recap. Live prices were 2.00 to 6.00 higher and dressed sales were steady to 5.00 higher. Live sales were reported at 210.00-218.00 and dressed sales were reported at 335.00-342.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 4065 head with a weighted average weight of 533.49 lbs. and a price value of 374.50, 2.27 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 33.88 per cwt.
