Compared to the light test from last week, feeder steers and heifers sold 5.00 to 25.00 higher gaining back all of last week's losses and then some. Auctions barns shook of the uncertainty and volatility of the prior week and seemed to forget about factors outside of the fundamental factors directly related to supply and demand of cattle. The supply of feeders was moderate with several large drafts of yearlings being offered at various auctions this week as well as plenty of calves which is typical for this time of year. Demand was good to very good for all classes of cattle from grazing calves to fill the green grass pastures that are quickly growing to yearlings that could go multiple ways and even replacement heifers. The monthly cattle on feed report was released a day early this month due to Good Friday. Overall, on the surface the report was mostly neutral to perhaps an ever so slight touch bearishness but looking at the bigger picture of total numbers and several months of reports nothing negative to be found at this point. On feed was published at 98.4 percent, placements at 105.1 and marketings at 101.1 percent of a year ago. Being a quarterly report the break down of steers and heifers on feed was included and published with a percentage of 62:38 which still does not support any major retention or growth in breeding stock at this point. A few stick out sales this week included 31 head of 420 lb. steers at South Central Regional Stockyards which sold for 420.00. Callaway Livestock Center sold 53 head of 501 lb. fancy grazing steers for 440.00 as well as 120 head of 883 lb. steers for 280.75. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 103 head of 619 lb. steers for 354.00 and 498 head of 841 lb. steers for 292.10. Mo-Kan Livestock Market sold 130 head of 939 lb. steers for 264.00. On the heifer side Callaway Livestock Center sold 67 head of 548 lb. heifers for 351.25. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold five loads of heifers from 714-743 lbs. all for 293.75. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed this week. Choice closed on Friday at 331.52, down 2.70 and Select closed at 315.55, up 1.59 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled just over 64K head as of the 2:00 report cutoff time. Live prices were 4.00 to 7.00 higher and dressed sales were 5.00 to 12.00 higher. Live sales in the south were mostly 208.00- 210.00 and 212.00-215.00 in the north with dressed sales in the north 332.00-340.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 6853 head with a weighted average weight of 529.04 lbs. and a price value of 372.33, 20.79 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread at 39.60.
