Compared to last week, steers under 650 lbs and heifers under 600 sold unevenly steady to 2.00 lower, heavier weight feeders sold steady to 3.00 higher. Supply was moderate, mostly calves even though some are pretty big calves but sure enough still calves which is pretty normal for this time of year. There was some sales however that had several loads of yearlings on hand. Windsor Livestock Auction for example sold near 20 full loads of yearlings. Demand was moderate to good with health records playing a big part of how strong demand was. Markets seems to be a bit stronger in areas where grain is more common which seems a bit odd or early perhaps given that most farmers are getting into the fields as corn harvest is getting into full swing and one would not expect those buyers to be in the barns currently. One thing that is concerning is the moisture conditions in the southwestern corner of the state. That area is getting really dry and not seeing any fall pasture growth which is very important as those guys rely on stock piled pastures to get them by from frost to snow fall. There has been an uptick in cow sales with lower prices noted and likely some feeders coming to market when guys would prefer to keep them till the weather swings pass and markets get a bit more stable. Boxed beef cutouts turned higher this week with choice closing on Thursday at 217.48 up 1.84 and select at 207.74 up 3.80 compared to last Friday. Feed yard managers dug in this week with most sales not taking place till later on Thursday, right at 110K head confirmed for the week. Live sales reported at mostly 105.00 and dressed sales mostly 165.00 both generally 1.00-2.00 higher compared to last week. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 4,612 head with a weighted average weight of 556.22 lbs. and a price value of 151.53, 0.77 lower than last Friday.
