Compared to last week, calves sold steady to 3.00 lower, yearlings sold steady to 5.00 higher. Feeder supply was moderate with quite a few loads of yearlings in the offering this week finding very good demand. Bawling and unweaned calves continue to see discounts and are much less desirable to buyers. Typical early fall temperature swings make these cattle very high health risk which will remain the case until a hard frost comes and population in sick pens drops. Buyers are quite willing to pay premiums for cattle if producers invest time in and provide a good documented health program too. Drought conditions continue to spread covering all of the southwest part of the state and a stretch up though the Ozarks all the way to St. Louis. The northwest corner is now also showing on the monitor. As the average first frost date nears hope for stockpiling pastures is fading quickly. Grain farmers on the other hand are at least temporarily enjoying the dry conditions as grain harvest is in full swing and they are seeing some of the highest prices of the year right in the middle of harvest. Boxed beef cuts outs for choice continued to climb Choice was at 218.98 as of Thursday’s close up 3.11 from last Friday. Select was reported at 207.62 up 0.02. Feedlot trade developed on Thursday with just over 113K head reported. Lives sales ranged from 103.00-109.00, mostly 107.00. Dressed sales were reported from 164.00-169.00, mostly 167.00. The Missouri Stocker formula for Friday consisted of 4050 head with a weighted average of 548.15 lbs. and a price value of 150.43 down 1.10 compared to last Friday.
