Compared to last week, steers and heifers traded mostly steady to 3.00 higher. Demand and supply were moderate. The unseasonably pleasant weather was welcomed this past week. Pasture conditions continue to be in pretty good shape, for the time of year. This week’s drought monitor increased some areas from D0 Abnormally Dry to D1 Moderate drought, but the overall footprint drought hasn’t changed much from last week. Boxed beef cuts closed on Thursday at 225.38 and 206.31, for Choice and Select, respectively. The steady increase to values this week put Choice cuts 11.14 higher and Select cuts 7.06 higher than last Friday. CME Group announced this week that they are changing futures limits, pending the Trading Commission approval. Live Cattle futures limits will increase from $3.00 to $4.00 per hundred weight, with extended limits moving from $4.50 to $6.00 per hundredweight. Feeder Cattle futures limits will increase from $4.50 to $5.00 per hundredweight, with extended limits moving from $6.75 to $7.50 per hundredweight. This month’s Cattle on Feed report will be released this afternoon. Pre-report industry estimates have On-Feed numbers mostly steady, the placements estimate has about a six percent increase and marketings slightly lower. The average estimate for placements is the largest for August since 2012. The Livestock Slaughter report released Thursday showed commercial beef production at 2.42 billion pounds, an increase of three percent over last year. Cattle slaughter was lowered by one percent to 2.92 million head, however dressed carcass weights are much heavier with an increase of almost thirty pounds from this time a year ago. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 4,442 head with a weighted average weight of 558.59 lbs. and a price value of 158.21, 0.91 higher than last Friday.
