Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 3.00 higher. Lighter weight calves under 500 lbs. were reported with some instances of lower money early week and in other cases local markets saw some yearling cattle much higher. The supply of feeders was moderate and demand was good despite the summer heat that has really taken hold over the state. Most of the north half of the state did see some rain this week while the southern half is getting drier each day. The latest drought monitor now shows over 50 percent of the state as abnormally dry. Pastures are starting to show more brown than green and late cute hay fields are not having hardly any signs of regrowth. Slaughter numbers are back to decent levels but there remains a lot of cattle left to work though due to the slow pace of April and May. Total meat production is higher however due to heavier carcass weights of cattle now. Boxed beef values as of Thursday’s close were a bit lower for the week. Choice was reported at 200.80 down 3.70 from last Friday and select at 191.30 down 2.99. Feedlot sales were steady to slightly higher with live sales reported from 95.00-100.00 and dressed 157.00-160.00. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 5121 head with a weighted average weight of 551.96 lbs. and a price value of 151.39 up 1.84 compared to last Friday.
