USDA puts feeder cattle receipts at 18,170 head. slaughter cattle receipts at 1,640 head. replacement cattle receipts at 714 head. Counted as USDA files them — 108 of those are cow-calf pairs, each counted once.

Compared to last week feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher, with the most advance noted on heavier weight long time weaned steers with good health programs. Given that most of last week’s volume was from two auctions and not exactly comparing apples to apples some sectors of the market didn’t look quite as good on paper as they really were. Some early week auctions choose to take this week off for observance of the holiday so still not a full week of auctions which affected the overall supply some. Extreme heat has now entered into the picture as well and will start having some effect on the markets as transportation becomes more challenging. Many of the big video sales are taking place across the nation now which will move big numbers of yearlings to their next spot in the supply chain. Boxed beef cutouts continue to drop but the pace has slowed some. As of Thursdays close choice was reported 203.59 down 1.85 from last week and select at 194.76 down 3.93. Feedlot sales for the week should mostly be wrapped up as good volume was reported on Wednesday. So far this week total negotiated volume is just over 90k head with live sales reported from 94.00-100.00 and dressed sales from 155.00-160.00. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 3,817 head with a weighted average weight of 549.53 lbs. and a price value of 149.55, 2.88 lower than last Friday.
