Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves steady to 3.00 lower, yearlings steady to 3.00 higher. Demand and supply moderate. Live and dressed sales continue to shave off dollars. Live purchases were reported from 98.00 to 102.00, however bulk of sales were 100.00 to 102.00. Dressed purchases were reported from 157.00 to 162.00. The decline of Boxed Beef cut value persists, with Choice and Select cuts closing on Thursday at 213.56 and 204.08, respectively. This is 17.08 and 15.19 lower than last Friday’s close, respectively. The record high prices in May had significant affects on demand, but it is slowly coming back. We are well into the summer and people are buying hamburger and cuts to grill. The decline in boxed beef cuts should trickle down to the consumer soon. This month’s Cattle on Feed report will be released this afternoon. Some pre-report estimates have on-feed cattle at an average of 11.6 million head. However, the range of estimates is wide. Placements have been estimated at about 2.013 million head, down 2.4 percent, but the range of estimates is extremely wide. Marketings are estimated at 1.524 million head, a decrease of 26.4 percent. Plenty of haying has been done across the state, with the several dry, hot days this past week. As of Monday’s Crop Progress report, 80 percent of the state’s 1st cutting of alfalfa has been completed and 50 percent of other hay has been cut. However, those numbers will likely jump by next week’s report. Along with hay being put up, farmers are wrapping up soybean planting and starting to combine wheat. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 6,294 head with a weighted average weight of 551.60 lbs, and a price value of 151.09, 2.96 lower than last Friday.
