Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold mostly steady to 5.00 higher. The feeder supply was heavy as nearly all barns saw good numbers of cattle finally coming to town this week. Demand was moderate to good. Weather has been much more New England-like over the past week with a lot of clouds and rain in the southern part of the state. Haying has been difficult to impossible but good planting progress was reported in the report for the week ending April 17th. Corn and beans planted are nearly even with the five year average, but like everything else some sun and growing degrees would be very welcomed. The monthly cattle on feed report is due to be released after business on Friday afternoon. Pre-report estimates have placements at 77.1%, on feed at 95% and marketings at 74.6%. Boxed beef cutouts lost some ground this week but are not dropping nearly as fast as they climbed, at least currently. As of Thursday’s close, Choice was reported at 401.81, down 32.51 and Select was reported at 382.53 down 36.53 compared to last Friday’s closes. Negotiated feedlot volume for the week, as of this report has totaled 75,996. Live sales have ranged from 114.00-120.00 and dressed sales 175.00-190.00 with multiple days of trade again this week. Slaughter numbers continue to climb back to more normal levels. Wednesday saw the first day of that the daily slaughter was over 100K since early April. Lower numbers over this last several weeks has totaled over a million head below what would be considered normal now which means there is still a long time before everything is caught back up. It is a very complex matter, however, as placements have been very low the last couple of months and it is only the heavier cattle which have been on feed for many days already that are backing up. This is what is leading many to believe there is a possibility for some good marketing opportunities in the coming months ahead once the back log is worked through and managers find a lot of pens to fill due to the lower placements. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 8922 head with a weighted average weight of 542.43 lbs. and a price value of 156.81, 0.42 lower than last Friday.
