Compared to last week feeder steers and heifers sold mostly steady to 2.00 higher, with some heavier weights 3.00 to 5.00 higher with a better supply this week consisting of several load lots. Locally markets were very uneven with auction trends stretched from 6.00 lower to 10.00 higher. The volatility of the markets in the last month and a half has made it extremely difficult for both buyers and sellers alike. The supply of feeders was moderate with numbers being at levels which are typical for this time of year, which has not been the case for most weeks since early March. Demand was moderate, especially for the bigger load lots of feeders in the barns as some producers are just not able to hold cattle any longer. Feedlot trade has been light again this week, as of this report confirmed sales have totaled just under 50,000. Sales on Tuesday and Wednesday were mostly at 95.00 live and 150.00 dressed although Texas saw 100.00 live on Tuesday. Thursday saw a few more sales were reported with live prices mostly 100.00 and dressed at 160.00. Cattle slaughter for the week is expected to be below 500,000 head, roughly 140,000 less than a year ago. Boxed beef cutouts skyrocketed setting all time record highs on Wednesday only to blow those out of the water again on Thursday. The previous record close for choice was 265.59, set in May of 2015. As of Thursday’s close choice was reported at 284.29, up 45.30 and select was reported at 272.89, up 45.69 compared to last Friday’s close. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 5787 head with a weighted average weight of 528.42 lbs. and a price value of 155.32, which is 0.57 higher than last Friday
