Compared to last week, steers under 700 lbs. and heifers under 600 lbs. sold 5.00-10.00 lower, with a few of lighter weights either of very high quality or thin fleshed and ready to quickly add weight on grass selling closer to or near steady. Heavier weight steers over 700 lbs. and heifers over 600 lbs. sold 10.00-15.00 lower. The supply of feeders was light with receipts continuing to be well below what is expected this time of year. Producers seemingly continue to hold out on marketing given current price levels. Lack of total volume in the last month and a half or so has to end in some large auctions at some point as sooner or later producers will have to sale. Lush green grass growing in the pastures rather than having to feed hay or chop ice does make holding cattle a bit easier of a choice, but we know how fast conditions can change in the state and pastures can go from green to brown in a hurry and totally change the dynamic as temperatures increase in the coming weeks. Feeder markets sure aren’t the only markets that have been affected, average dressing cull slaughter cows currently averaging in the mid to upper 40’s. Demand is light to moderate as buyers just have little reason or desire to push prices with so much uncertainty about when the market will finally find some footing. Adding insult to injury several reports this week of impacts to slaughter facilities, there just is no way to stress how vital and important it is to every aspect of the industry and food supply that plants find some way to keep chains moving. These health issues along with other issues of moving product such as the fact people cannot go to steakhouses on Friday night or fill the back yard with neighbors for a Sunday afternoon bar-b-que is really affecting product movement. Slaughter numbers this week have been lower and packers haven’t been eager to buy a lot of cattle the last couple of weeks. Negotiated feedlot sales were dismal last week and as of this report about the same this week. The limited volume so far this week had live sales reported mostly at 105.00, 7.00 lower and dressed sales at 168.00, 7.00-12.00 lower than last week. Boxed beef cut outs closed Thursday with choice at 222.67 down 7.77 and select at 207.57 down 8.27 compared to last Friday. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 4120 head with a weighted average weight of 534.46 lbs. and a price value of 149.87, which is 6.58 lower than last Friday
