Compared to last week, feeder steers sold 15.00-20.00 higher and heifers sold 10.00-15.00 higher. Once again this week the supply of feeders was light with some sales not having enough on hand to report. There wasn’t any locations that had sales with near the offering that would be considered normal for this time of year but there was a few sales that had some load lots of cattle offered. Demand for feeders was good and the load lots that showed up had some pretty impressive numbers displayed on the weight boards after the hammer fell. These loads saw the full increase of the market this week and gave folks something positive to talk about although currently most talk isn’t taking place around a table at the local coffee shops as usual but via text, phone call, or over social media. Kingsville Livestock Auction had consignment of 118 head of steers weighting 778 lbs. that climbed to 158.35 when bidding stopped. There is no doubt that there are a lot of feeders in the country backing up on farms that will have to show up at some point. Mud and market volatility over the last month has resulted in many farmers holding on to cattle longer than normal. Many barns have said if the market holds likely the next couple of weeks could see significant volume. Feedlot trade saw most volume on Wednesday prices and were sharply higher with live sales were 8.00-14.00 higher ranging from 115.00-122.00 over the week, most of the trade occurred at 119.00-120.00. Dressed sales were mostly 15.00-20.00 higher and ranged from 180.00-190.50 with most occurring at 190.00. On top of that some packers offered a premium to the purchase price which gave feed lots a little extra this week. Packer margins soared last week with the choice boxed beef cutout up nearly 48.00 for the week, According to the Sterling Profit Tracker, which of course isn’t a be all tell all but a good benchmark to track, showed the packer margin for the week ending March 20th at 504.43, compared to 175.65 the previous week, and 69.02 a month ago. Feedlot margins were reported at a loss of 89.49, nearly the same as the previous week, and down from 161.70 on the plus side a month ago. Boxed beef cutout values were mixed for the week for the week as of Thursday’s close with choice reported at 253.57 which is 0.18 lower and select at 242.17 up an even 2.00 compared to last Friday. Volume this week was much closer to normal as the shelves start to fill back up at grocery stores and price levels have met some resistance now. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 1326 head with a weighted average weight of 537.08 lbs. and a price value of 162.51, which is 16.97 higher than last Friday.
